A PLACE – AN ETERNITY
In the heart of the Pindos Mountains, where a landscape of primordial beauty unfurls, the earth takes centre stage, telling its own story.
Hidden in one of the most untouched corners of Greece rises a place shaped by millions of years. Rugged, sheer mountain peaks give way to dense forests, deep gorges, lakes, and rivers that whisper ancient melodies. It wasn’t born from Tolkien’s imagination, nor from the Seven Kingdoms of Game of Thrones. There are no hobbits here, but in the shadows of the plane trees, one can still imagine dinosaurs stopping to rest.
The Vikos-Aoos National Park, stretching from the Vikos Gorge to the Aoos Ravine, with the imposing Tymfi mountain range rising between them, is not only a global natural monument. It is also the backdrop to an epic fairy tale full of contrasts. The earth, the stone, and the rushing rivers and streams of the Aoos and Voidomatis tell an old story, etched into layers of rock that resemble the pages of ancient manuscripts.
The wider region included in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network is a collection of geological treasures. Gorges of breathtaking depth, alpine lakes and plateaus, caves, and peaks with rocks formed on the seabed, now rising above 2,000 metres, all bear witness to eras when ice reigned and lent the landscape an otherworldly beauty.
Walking along the well-maintained trails of the park, the remarkable legacy left behind by the glaciers is revealed: the mythical Tymfi Dragon Lake, the largest alpine lake at an altitude of 2,050 metres. Beside it, the towering cliffs that form the Towers of Astraka seem to hold up the sky itself, rising protectively above Papigo.
Forests of oak, plane trees, cedars, and firs shelter an exceptional variety of wildlife, while rare and protected plant species such as white lilies and narcissi, together with renowned medicinal herbs, fill the alpine meadows, slopes, and rock crevices, creating a world that is wild yet as finely crafted as a sculpture.
The mountain landscape is adorned with beautiful traditional villages, each with a long history and distinctive architecture. Mikro and Megalo Papigo, Vikos, and Monodendri are some of the settlements born from the mountain itself – stone-built, austere, and majestic. From there, the route that begins in Monodendri and leads towards Oxya, offering panoramic views of the Vikos Gorge, ends at the wonder of the Stone Forest: a series of impressive limestones spread across a forest of maples and oaks.
The harmonious coexistence of nature and humankind is testified to by the many stone bridges that characterise Northern Pindos and the architecture of Epirus. Built during the 18th and 19th centuries, they stand proudly through time as masterful examples of the old craftsmen’s skill. Single-arched, like the famous Kokkoros Bridge in Zagori or the Konitsa Bridge at the mouth of the Aoos Gorge, double-arched or triple-arched, and always well preserved, they seem to hover above the water, perfectly in tune with the nature surrounding them.
In this unique mountain world, wonders are endless – they don’t stop at the boundaries of the national park. The rare alpine landscapes stretch across the peaks and plateaus of Central and Southern Pindos, and where Epirus meets Thessaly lies yet another striking geological phenomenon: Verliga Dragon Lake. With its watery, almost calligraphic meanders, which fill and empty with the changing seasons, it resembles a living organism, constantly shifting shape and radically transforming the surrounding landscape.
The wild harmony of the region’s treasures offers not only an unforgettable travel experience, but also a kind of passage: from the modern world to the primordial, from the human to the natural, from the present to the eternal.
