Bay of Beauty

This little area down the hill from Oia is a place that you must see. Otherwise, you’ll be missing out on a great experience. It was once Oia’s main port, shipping tonnes of Vinsanto wine, lentils and tomatoes as far afield as Russia. Today, it’s a charming, postcard-worthy locale. ‘Lara Croft‘ would certainly approve, seeing as the location was chosen for the film, ‘Tomb Raider- The Cradle of Life‘. You can descend from Oia down to Ammoudi via a steep, winding road, or on foot down 214 steps. The options are many- tasting the best taramosalata (fish roe dip) at ‘Katina‘ fish tavern, bearing witness to stunning brides and handsome grooms celebrating sunset weddings, diving from the rocks of Ai-Nikolas, or taking a boat to Thirasia, a small island a stone’s throw from Ammoudi. Once you’ve been here, you won’t want to leave.
