The Mythical River of Epirus

The Mythical River of Epirus.

From Souli in the mountains, among ancient plane trees, the Acheron River gushes forth, forming gorges and small lakes that have created a fascinating and varied ecosystem under the protection of the Natura Network. Stigmatised by mythology, the ancient Greeks referred to it as The River of Souls, where Hermes delivered the dead to Charon to ferry them to the kingdom of Hades. Still today, the 50-kilometre-longriver winds its way between myth and reality, its captivating and wild splendour flowing to the Ionian Sea. Though the river was once associated with death, it nevertheless pulsates with life today. Thousands of birds roost on the cliffs and rocks along its banks and wheel above its waters. Hikers follow its course, exploring from the trailhead that begins at the information centre in Glyki. In summer, the river attracts rafting enthusiasts. The marked route towards Skala Tzavelena descending to the river is relatively easy trekking if you follow the path used by the inhabitants of Souli during the Turkish occupation. From the Dragon Cave, gurgling springs sing their melodies into pristine nature. If you are the adventurous type, continue the hike from Skala Tzavelena to reach the Souli Plateau at the village of Samoniva. The enchanting scenery changes along the way, incentive enough to make plenty of stops to catch your breath along the impressive gorge of Acheron.
